Russian gas giant Gazprom delivers its promise and cutts gas supplies to Ukraine after Moscow and Kyiv failed to reach a deal for 2009. At 10 am (0700GMT), Gazprom turned off gas taps to Ukraine as previously planned, company spokesman Igor Volobuyev announced on Thursday.
Ukraine's gas company, Naftogaz has also confirmed a steady fall in supplies, AP reported.
For months now, the Russian and Ukrainian officials have been trying to resolve their differences over a gas supply deal for 2009.
However, negotiations have not borne fruit as the two sides strongly disagree about the price of gas and the amount of Ukrainian debt over previous imports.
While Ukraine claims that it has paid Russia USD 1.5 billion to cover for its debt, Gazprom says that it has received no payment from Kyiv, which owes over USD 2 billion.
There are fears that the ongoing dispute could lead to a European fuel crisis, as Russia supplies more than 80 percent of the continent's gas via pipes that pass through Ukraine, giving Kyiv the power to cutoff Russian gas exports.
